ISSUE

We’ve identified a rare issue, affecting a small number of devices during the Ubuntu operating system upgrade from Xenial (16.04 LTS) to Bionic (18.04 LTS).

SYMPTOM

After the OS upgrade installation has been completed and the system reboots to load the new OS, no hard disk is found by the BIOS on boot.

Subsequent warm reboots (i.e. CTRL-ALT-DEL) present the same message.

POTENTIAL CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE

There appears to be some rare interaction between the Ubuntu kernel upgrade and system BIOS firmware causing this issue.

SOLUTION

If you encounter this issue during the upgrade, simply power off the device and power it back on to complete the upgrade.
