BRC - Unable to inherit record – Error code 20

Problem: The user sees the following error:

Action: [For corrective actions www.axcient.com/log-actions] Backup for "Backup Job" - Image on Device Failed --- Error - Error: Unable to inherit record. Cause: No such file or directory Error: Incremental backup failed Error: Backup failed Error: Backup failed with error code 20 Backup of share C failed. Errors occurred during backup. Errors occurred during task execution.

 This error will generally be accompanied by the following warning error below the failure in the Event Logs with a listing of which file failed:

Action: Backup for "Backup Job" - Image on Device Warning - retention pruning failed: (9455)[retention.c:147 retain_cb()] Failed to retain regfile "Windows/assembly/GAC_MSIL/Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.PowerShell/6.1.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35/ Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager. In the example above,

C:/Windows/assembly/GAC_MSIL/Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.PowerShell/ 6.1.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35/Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.PowerShell.dll

is causing the issue.

Cause: This is error is triggered by the listed file. This may be because the file is corrupted, or because the VSS writers on the device are having issues accessing the file for replication.

Solution: The user can follow the steps in the Best Practices for Excluding Files article to exclude the file listed in the user’s particular error message. However, Axcient Support will need to be contacted in order to resolve this issue.
